What material is Pigs Tail® plastic hydraulic hose protection made from and why?
Spiral wrap hose protectors like the ones from Pigs Tail® are typically made from heavy-duty HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). This material offers excellent impact protection whilst maintaining flexibility.
Unlike some other materials, HDPE doesn’t add a significant amount of additional weight to the application.

How do I know what size to use and how much I need?
Our part numbers are based on the nominal outer dimension of the tube. You will need to match up the inside diameter of the hose protection to the outside measurement of the application. You’ll find the dimensions on our product pages.
Use this simple calculation to calculate how much spiral is required.
Outer dimension of the hose (mm) divided by the inner dimension of the spiral hose guard (mm) x the length of the hose (metres).
So, if you were looking to cover 80 metres of a 90mm outside diameter hose, you would need to use a spiral hose wrap (R90SSG) which has a nominal inside measurement of approximately 80mm.
The calculation would be 90 / by 80 = 1.125 metres of protector per metre of hydraulic hose, then times by 80 to get the amount required.
90 / 80 = 1.125
1.125 x 80 = 90m
Remember the above calculation is an estimate only – always round up to be sure.
